Policing Services is mandated to help keep communities safe and to maintain public order by providing effective and efficient policing through programs that uphold the rule of law, while also protecting the rights of individuals.

Policing is the responsibility of local communities, which can choose whether to employ municipal police officers or RCMP officers. There are almost 2,500 police officers working in Saskatchewan. Just under 1,100 of those officers work in 12 municipalities and in one First Nation self-administered police service. The RCMP has 1,393 funded, member-positions, in Saskatchewan. They are responsible for federal, municipal, provincial and First Nations Policing duties. The RCMP also police 34 First Nations.Policing Services administers the agreement with the federal government for the use of the RCMP as Saskatchewan's provincial police service. The Division also administers funding agreements with municipal police services to provide resources for targeted enforcement strategies and initiatives.

Policing Services provides staff and administrative support to the Saskatchewan Police Commission, which promotes effective policing, and oversees the operation of the Saskatchewan Police College. The Division is also responsible for administering programs such as Aboriginal Policing, Private Investigators and Security Guards, VISE and SCAN.

The Division administers the Public Disclosure Committee, which advises police on difficult decisions regarding whether to release identifying information about dangerous offenders returning to the community after completing their sentence.

During 2009 CPSP announced funding for a new enforcement unit to focus on drug and gang activity in northern Saskatchewan. The unit is made up of members of the RCMP and Prince Albert Police Service. Its aim is to disrupt and dismantle street level gang and drug activity in the north.
