The Office of the Fire Commissioner administers Saskatchewan's legislation regarding fire prevention, fire codes and emergency planning.

The Fire Prevention Act requires that every fire in the province be investigated, and mandates the compilation of fire-loss statistics. The Act gives the Fire Commissioner authority to appoint Local Assistants in every municipality, and details the rights and responsibilities of local Fire Departments in carrying out their fire prevention, protection and suppression programs.
