RECOVERY AND CLEANUP General Guidelines for Managing Flood-related DebrisDebris disposal is the responsibility of the individuals or community where the debris was created or found. In most cases, flood-related debris should be managed the same as other waste materials:
Non-hazardous debris and garbage, as well as construction and demolition waste from flooding or cleanup operations, should be disposed of at a municipal landfill, regional landfill, commercial landfill or associated licensed transfer station. Check with your municipality or the Ministry of Environment for more information about the landfill and transfer stations available to you. Items that are unsuitable for disposal in a landfill should be temporarily stored in a secure location until proper arrangements for disposal can be made. Ask your municipality about a location for long-term dangerous goods storage. Please observe any landfill areas that are designated for the disposal of specific materials, such as metal, demolition materials, asbestos, shingles, etc. If access to the local landfill is temporarily unavailable due to local flood conditions, the local authority will provide alternate arrangements for waste disposal. |
